Teaching & Learning Every year KIPP students must make significant academic gains. This growth can only happen with great teaching and remarkable instructional support for teachers and leaders. The KIPP Academic Strategies Pyramid and the KIPP Framework for Excellent Teaching, which together describe the elements of high-performing schools and classrooms, are rooted in the latest research about what works to help all students succeed. Our approach builds on what our outstanding educators are doing in their classrooms, and incorporates what we’ve learned from partners such as Achievement First, Uncommon Schools, Success Academies, Noble Street, Edward Brooke Charters, YES Prep and the Relay Graduate School of Education. College At KIPP, we make a promise to all our students: We will prepare you for success in college and in life.

To make earning a college degree a reality for more KIPPsters, we help our students apply to and attend their best match colleges. And once they are in, we implement a range of supports to help KIPP alumni persist in college and reach graduation. KIPP has developed unique partnerships with higher education where we are learning from each other about how to increase graduation rates for students from low income families and those who are the first in their families to attend college. Leadership Development Great teachers and leaders are key to excellent schools. But, great leaders don’t come out of nowhere: they thrive as a result of ongoing development and coaching. At KIPP, our approach to leadership development is grounded in the KIPP Leadership Competency Model and modeled on critical career passages from The Leadership Pipeline.

In partnership with Vital Smarts, we have identified the four Vital Behaviors for Success and Sustainability. We incorporate these behaviors into all of our leadership development, and into our organizational culture as a whole. Character KIPP believes that our students need both a strong academic foundation and well-developed character strengths to succeed in college and the world beyond. Our approach to character is grounded in the development of seven character strengths that are found to be highly predictive of success in life. Our character framework was developed by KIPP NYC in collaboration with Dr. Angela Duckworth, Dr.

Martin Seligman, the late Dr. Chris Peterson, and in partnership with Riverdale Country School. Based on research and experience, KIPP has developed resources to help teachers, students, and parents foster these character strengths. We continue to explore emerging strategies such as restorative justice, to help build positive school communities.
