By 2013-08-25 15:30:19 UTC If you pick up a copy of Madden 25 when the iconic video game's latest version releases Tuesday, it's possible you'll want a guide to go with it. If so, it's likely that guide will be the produced by Random House division Prima Games. But here's something you should know: that massive Madden players' bible doesn't just emerge out of the ether. It's the product of months of work by a miniature cabal of male twenty-somethings who are living out what many hardcore enthusiasts would call a dream. See also: These men are professional gamers.
Fable 2 Guide
For the past two months, they've spent thousands of hours playing early versions of Madden 25, paid to do so by Prima. Their mission? To figure out the game's ins and outs, which players are digitally overrated or underrated, effective new plays and unstoppable new moves so that you — yes, you, lowly casual gamer who plays for free on your own spare time — can one day maybe beat it. Eric Wright is 25 years old and lives in West Covina, Calif. He won his first Madden tournament in high school, taking home $500. Since then, he's raked in more than $250,000 kicking butt on the digital gridiron.
Madden 25 Strategy Guide
Wright's spent the past several weeks on contract with Prima, playing the new game for he says between 10 and 16 hours per day to figure out all the best ways 'you can score the easiest, how you stop somebody, how to set up the best defenses and blitzes.' But, despite his astounding career earnings, Wright still keeps a day job at a company that inspects and cleans machinery. Like a pro athlete taking the long view on life, he says he wants to keep the day gig because it's 'consistent income and I know Madden isn't always going to be there.' Getting time off work to research the Prima guide, however, is no problem. 'My boss knows that I play,' Wright says. 'He plays Madden too and he knows the situation.
He has no problem with it.' For two of Wright's Prima colleagues though, Madden is a full-on living. Steve Gibbons and Zach Farley are 27-year-olds from Massachusetts.
When not working on the Prima guides each year, they run the website. They haven't had day jobs since 2011. 'People think we just sit around and play video games all day — which is kind of true, but not the whole story,' Farley says. They host a weekly call-in show, for example, in which they play live against other players, run down roster changes, give pointers and answer questions from other gamers. But sometimes, their job calls for feats of endurance and focus that would make real-life players cringe.
Beginning at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, Gibbons and Farley will sit down for a 25-hour Madden 25 marathon to promote the newest Prima guide. It'll be and they'll face off against a few pro athletes during the binge session. If anyone can handle that 25-hour dose of Madden, it's these two.
But even they are a bit daunted by the challenge. 'I honestly don't know what we're going to do,' Gibbons says. 'We're bringing in the air mattresses, but I don't know what we're going to do about food and water. The AC turns off in our office space at night, too, so it'll be hot. Things are going to get weird.' Image: Frederic J.
